A parody of conformist modern life, Victims of Duty plunges Ionesco's latest cast of characters into an obscure search for the character "Mallot with a t. " Featuring government inspectors, French baguettes, slapstick, and surrealist journeys into the subconscious, Victims of Duty poses and solves Ionesco's tragicomic dilemma with the blend of gravity and humor that is his hallmark.

Written in 1952, Ionesco's Victims of Duty exploits the noir detective formulas of its time as we find our bourgeois everyman, Choubert, and his wife Madeleine, enjoying a quiet existence at home. Soon all is shattered when the Detective, trying to track down the previous tenant of their flat, arrives and enlists Choubert to aide in his search. Their journey is a roller-coaster of high comedy and tragedy, as Choubert examines his past, present, and future in dutiful response to the search for Mallot’s whereabouts.

PRESS RELEASE

CAST

Lee Pucklis (Nicholas) I cannot not act. The Muse affords me the luxury of freely processing my depression and impathic-empathic emotion in a "framework of civility" considered socially acceptable. Still, how unfortunate to be dominated by commercial theism. What I offer you in this evening's pseudo-drama is the experience itself, an invitation to activism, to a stimulation of thought, passion, imagination, connection and purpose, to a recognition that your life and the way you live it, is your art. My continuing thanks to Meisner, Strasberg, LeGallienne, Clurman, Lucille Lortel, Austin Pendleton, June Havoc, Irene Baird, and Rip Torn for their generosity. Professional credits include character roles on Broadway, off-Broadway, in LORT and stock theatres as well as film and television. If necessary, kindly view the IRC website for role and director listings. Peace. lpucklis@hotmail.com

CREW
(
LIGHTS and SOUND)

Brian Adoff (The Detective) recently moved back to his hometown of Philly from Chicago where he worked and lived for the past three years. Training includes with Julie Garfield at the T. Schreiber studio in NY, and at Second City, Victory Gardens Theatre, and with Ed Hooks in Chicago. Also in Chicago, Brian worked and trained in physical theatre and clowning with Redmoon Theatre, Collaboraction Theatre, and Czech physical theatre company Teatro Novoga Fronta. Aside from his stage work, Brian has appeared in numerous commercials, industrials, and short films. Currently, Brian can be seen in his cabaret nightclub show "Monkey Bar Nights," performed periodically at Bridget Foy's Restaurant. Amie Shafer (Madeleine) is thrilled to bring Victims of Duty to life with such a talented cast and crew. After graduating from the University of the Arts, Amie understudied at the Arden (Dancing at Lughnasa, The Stinky Cheese Man), confronted her Ghosts of Christmas (Facing the Silence), and gossiped on her lawn in the Fringe (Azuka One-Acts). Catch her next in BCKSEET Production's rock musical, Hung on a Blonde Ponytail, in April. Amie would like to thank Tina, Ryan, and the cast for the adventure, and Pie and her family for their constant encouragement. To Mish-"We don't grow old when we're in love." Ryan McMenamin (Stage Manager, Technical Director) is thrilled, chilled, and little bit spilled to be a part The Consortium as it tackles its second production. Like most everything else in Ryan's theatrical career, working with IRC came by chance. As the resident stage manager and sound designer for The Waitstaff Sketch Comedy Troupe, Ryan quickly learned that working behind the scenes is something to be deeply proud of: Actors and directors have their glory. Tech people have their knobs and glow tape... Pat Lewis (The Lady) has worked as stage manager, set designer, costumer, and props master for many local theaters. She is a writer, and has written a musical about the run of the 23 Trolley, called The Ave. She is hoping to find a producer to back it. Her play A Little Gin Straight Up will be presented in the fall. She is thrilled to be working with Tina and this cast. Isn't that right Madam? Bob Schmidt (Choubert) appeared in IRC's inaugural show, Three One Acts! during last year's Fringe Festival. Recent work includes: Samuel Beckett's Catastrophe, also with IRC; Samuel Beckett's Endgame for Hunger Theatre; Tina Brock's The White Hoe Returns: Breaking New Wind; and Skewed Shakespeare and Chekhovmania for Random Acts of Theater. Bob was also a producer, writer and performer for the once-popular but now sadly defunct Philadelphia-based sketch comedy group Haz Mat. Many, many thanks to Tina for pushing and prodding him until he often cried; to Amy, Brian, Lee and Pat for putting up with his tantrums, and Ryan for maintaining his composure and not slapping the hell out of him.
